Professor Andres Kasekamp has begun his position as Director of the Elmar Tampõld Chair of Estonian Studies at the University of Toronto. He is teaching in both the History Department and at the Munk School of Global Affairs. Professor Kasekamp has taught Political Science and History for over twenty years at the University of Tartu. He is a well-respected academic and valued by the larger public as an expert in international relations, political scholar, and analyst.

Estonian now holds the Presidency of the Council of the European Union from July to December of 2017. All of the work that Estonia has done to prepare and carry out the Presidency was done with a more significant plan in mind, not as a one time investment or effort, but to be useful for the country in the future. The experience of other countries holding the Presidency have shown that organizing the Presidency helps increase a country's power to negotiate and stand by their interests in Europe and elsewhere.

Professor Kasekamp will speak about the importance of the Presidency and will evaluate Estonia's opportunities to impact the development of the European Union.

This upcoming lecture is the first larger public lecture that Andres Kasekamp will be presenting to Toronto Estonians after being away for many years and will be an opportunity to reintroduce yourself to him. The lecture will be in Estonian. A reception will follow, where Andres will be welcomed back to Toronto and we will be able to wish him luck in his position as Chair of Estonian Studies.

This event is organized by the Chair of Estonian Studies Foundation and Estonian Studies Centre/VEMU.
