MUSEUM OF ESTONIANS ABROAD

Where our history lives on!

VEMU'S ESTABLISHMENT

VEMU is an emerging memory institution. The completion of VEMU's structure, strategy and schedule of activities is done in collaboration with Estonian organizations and experts. Following the reorganization of the Estonian Studies Centre in 2016, the VEMU Collections and Cultural Programs were established, to which a number of representatives of different organizations in Canada and Estonia belong.

COLLECTIONS

VEMU's collections are expanding through single donations as well as through the integration of multiple collections. The Estonian Arts Centre (established in 1974), which is currently located at the Toronto Estonian House, has promised to transfer their large art collection (over 400 pieces) and archives to VEMU. The Estonian Ethnography Circle of Canada has also started the process of transferring their rich collection of ethnographic artifacts to VEMU. Other organizations who have donated their archives to VEMU include the Estonian Central Council in Canada, the Toronto and Montreal Estonian Societies, and many others.

VEMU is also prepared to accept cultural collections from other Canadian-Estonians.

INFORMATION CENTRE

One of VEMU's goals is to become a centre for information about Canadian-Estonian cultural collections that are located elsewhere.

POPULARIZATION AND CULTURE EXCHANGE

VEMU displays its collections, organizes exhibitions, lecture, seminars and other events to provide an introduction to Estonian history and culture. VEMU acts as a networking point for cultural exchange between Estonia and Estonians living abroad to emphasize the importance of introducing Estonian culture to Canada.

As of 2014, VEMU has been an associate member of the Bloor Street Culture Corridor.

RESEARCH

VEMU's collections provide a widerange of possibilities for academic research. We contribute to a number of research projects, the outcomes of which can be seen in the form of publications, exhibits, films, etc.
