Bio:

Michael Mahkwa Auksi is a 34 year old hockey player who grew up in the Annex in Toronto. His father is from Lac Seul Ojibway First Nation and his mother is from Tallinn, Estonia. He received his Master of Social Work from Ryerson University in 2013 and is currently employed as the Recreation Coordinator at Native Child and Family Services of Toronto. Mike loves the game of hockey. While working his full-time job, he is currently also training to represent Estonia at February’s Group H Olympic Qualification Games to be held in Budapest, Hungary.

Synopsis:

Family, friends, ice hockey, personal training and video games. This was my life for the 21 months I spent in Estonia from September 2013 to May 2015. It is amazing to reflect on the fact that when I first started university in 2004, it was just so I could play hockey for the Varsity Blues. And when I transferred to Ryerson University in 2007, it was for more ice time. Things hadn’t changed much in the fall of 2013. I was flying to Estonia to follow my all-time dream: To represent Estonia at the 2015 IIHF World Hockey Championships. But as my Aunty Marion says, “There’s more to life than hockey!”
