Opening of the exhibit “Johannes Pääsuke: A Man with Two Cameras”

Join us for the opening of the touring exhibition “Johannes Pääsuke: A Man with Two Cameras” at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, March 31, 2012 in the main hall of Tartu College.

The exhibition was put together by the Estonian National Museum and Tartu Art College in 2003. The opening in Toronto will celebrate both 120 years since the birth of Johannes Pääsuke and the 100th anniversary of Estonian films.

The Estonian Studies Centre was created in 2009 by Tartu College with the aim of amalgamating the archives and libraries of Canada’s Estonians into a central location – the Museum of Estonians Abroad, also known as VEMU. Another of VEMU’s goals is to act as an intermediary for the cultures of Estonia and Estonians abroad. The exhibit of J. Pääsuke’s photographs is the fourth touring exhibition from Estonia to be displayed at Tartu College during the past year.

At Saturday’s opening, Riina Reinvelt, Head of Collections at the Estonian National Museum will acquaint us with a contributor to the Museum – Estonia’s first film-maker and unique documentary photographer Johannes Pääsuke. Ellen Valter, head of EstDocs, will advise those present of events planned to celebrate “Estonian Film 100” both in Estonia and Canada. VEMU’s Head Archivist Piret Noorhani will present a DVD featuring the creative works of J. Pääsuke. The DVD was prepared by the Estonian Film Archives to celebrate the 120th anniversary of the birth of J. Pääsuke. The attendees will also view a documentary films by Johannes Pääsuke as well as Estonia’s first feature film “Bear Hunt in Pärnu County” (1914, 12 minutes).
